I just returned from performing at the Blue & Gold Banquet for Cub Scout Pack 730 in Dallas, Texas! Everyone seemed to have a great time and the the Cub Scouts (and their siblings) were full of energy and thoughtful questions. As an Eagle Scout, I truly enjoy these events and always encourage the young Scouts to stay in Scouting and to strive to make it all the way to Eagle themselves.
Thanks to Cubmaster, Andrew Zinn for inviting me and to Meyer Zinn for helping me set up. And a big thanks to all the Cub Scouts in Pack 730. Keep having fun and keep on hiking up the Scouting trail. It gets more exciting the higher you climb!
My second and last school this San Antonio trip was to visit Benavidez Elementary—home of the Patriots, just like my own elementary school in Brownsville, TX—the Russell Patriots! I had another fun time and these kids seemed to really enjoy my program (I’ve already had several Facebook questions!).
I was in for a special treat when I got to enjoy a pizza party with several of the top accelerated readers from the school. We had a good time and they asked some great questions. Keep reading Alejandro, Daniel, Isaac, Jackeline, Larissa, and Sergio!
Thanks to Mrs. McMeans for inviting me and to Mr. Jaime for all the help. And a big thanks to all the Benavidez Patriots for making my last day in San Antonio a memorable one!

This week I found myself in San Antonio for National Library Week! I visited the Alamo, hiked the Riverwalk, and visited Maverick Elementary, home of the Dragons! The 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders took a break from studying to check out my presentations. We had a great time and Mrs. Ramon even drew some lucky winners to receive signed copies of my books!
Oh, I forgot to mention that many of the Dragons discovered my love of hats and wore all varieties of hats in my honor. Check out Squid-Man here! Don’t worry, Squid-Man! Your secret identity is safe with me. You can trust me to the MAX!
Thanks to Mrs. Ramon for inviting me and a big thanks to all the Maverick Dragons! Keep roaring and keep reading!
I was honored to be chosen as one of the 2012 Ten Haute Authors by Colophon—Friends of the SMU Libraries.
My wife, Becky Meehan, her mother, Rev. Annette Meehan, and I had a wonderful evening at this year’s Tables of Content — a fundraiser benefiting the annual Grants Program supporting the purchase of books, periodicals, electronic resources, and other much-needed equipment and materials for all of the SMU libraries.
Each of the authors had a table in a lovely courtyard, serenaded by a string quartet. I met several amazing people including author PJ Hoover (be sure to check out some of her cool books HERE) and our table host, Dr. Ruben L.F. Habito, Professor of World Religions and Spirituality at Perkins School of Theology. It was an evening of riveting conversation. Even former First Lady, Laura Bush was in attendance (although I didn’t get to say hi).
Thanks to Director Amy Carver and Coordinator Cindy Ruppi for the honor and invitation. And a special thanks to Dr. Habito for being such a gracious host.
